An ankle spraincan be caused by lack of balance skills, or an inversion of the foot. An inversion is when the ankle rolls inward toward the middle (midline) of the body. Symptoms of an ankle sprain are bruising, tenderness when touched, pain in the ankle, and the person may not be able to put weight on to his/her ankle. Ankle sprains can occur from sports with lots of running and jumping, like gymnastics. When running and jumping you have a better chance of inverting your ankle. For treatment options you can use the RICE method: rest, ice, compress, and elevate. You can also put ACE wrap on for the "compress" section in RICE. Physical therapy with an ankle sprain is also reccomended.
