You can't really prevent an ankle sprain, but you can know the risk factors. Risk factors for ankle sprains are: sports with lots of running and jumping, having a posture problem with the heel, and past injuries with the ankles. Posture problems with the heels are called hindfoot varus. This means that the general posture of the heel is toward inward, which makes it easier to invert the ankle. Past injuries with the ankles could have been anywhere from weak muscles, to weak ligaments and bones. Having past injuries increases the chance of an ankle sprain because the ankle has less instability. Sports with lots of jumping and running have a high risk factor because there is a larger chance that you will jump and then land on an inverted ankle. You should try your best to stay away from these risk factors of an ankle sprain.
